Long before Spencer Nilsen would provide his influential contributions to the video game music industry with Ecco the Dolphin and Batman Returns on the SEGA CD, he would compose a gorgeous, shimmering evocation of jazz fusion and new age originals in 1989, exploring a succession of environments from the exotic (“Spain by Horseback” and “Pyramids”) to the localized (“Church on Wally St.”). Whether one listens to the soulful ruminations of “Spoken Once” with its driving violin solo, or the title track – a driving, joyful work that recalls the like of Karl Jenkins’ classical crossover – there is much in Nilsen’s chiselled-perfect offering that lies in wait for the discerning listener.
Now, after its 35th anniversary, Architects of Change has finally been reissued from the brink of obscurity with careful remastering for vinyl by Spencer Nilsen himself, paired lovingly with a beautifully reimagined aquarelle artwork by Laura Llonch housed in a die-cut green sleeve with silver foil - just in time for a new audience to contemplate on a master’s triumphant construction of style and substance.
